Best Waterfalls In Northwestern Ontario

I’m excited to share the best waterfalls in Northwestern Ontario that I would recommend visiting. Northwestern Ontario is where I’ve called home for over 5 years and visiting these waterfalls became part of my regular life when going on hikes, workouts and showing friends and family when they visit.

Northern Ontario Waterfalls

First up is my all-time favourite waterfall in Northwestern Ontario, Mazukama Falls. Not only is this where I’ve been ice climbing, this is also one of my favourite hikes in Northern Ontario. Mazukama Falls is located just outside of Nipigon, ON.

I really enjoy it for a number of reasons. The hiking trail up to the falls runs parallel to the river the entire way so you get to see so many smaller waterfalls along the way. It’s absolutely incredible. The hike up isn’t too steep and I’ve seen kids on the trail before.

Even if you don’t make it to Mazukama Falls, the hike is still really beautiful and something I would definitely recommend. The hike up is definitely worth it though and a fun trip we always enjoy. It remains one of my favourite hikes.

If you’d like to continue your hike beyond the falls, you also have the option to do that. The trail gets a little more advanced and you have to hike on big rocks and through crevasses. It’s a fun adventure but might not be for everyone.

Rainbow Falls

Next on the list of best waterfalls in Northern Ontario is Rainbow Falls, just outside of Schreiber, ON in the Rainbow Falls Provincial Park.

I have definitely spent the most time exploring this waterfall because it was so close to where we lived. It’s a gradual and lovely waterfall that you can stop and explore at different points along the way down the hiking trail.

Most of the trail is covered in steps so it actually makes it fairly easy for most people to safely see the falls from below. Don’t forget though, what goes down must come up. There are quite a few stairs to get to the main bridge. That being said, you can stop to check out the falls and take breaks on your way up. There’s also a sitting area right at the top of the falls so you can see the water enter the falls from Whitesand Lake. It’s a beautiful viewing spot and great place to have lunch, stretch your legs, and simply enjoy beautiful Northwestern Ontario.

Aguasabon Falls

Aguasabon Falls is located just outside of Terrace Bay, ON and is a great place to stop and stretch your legs and visit the falls. There’s a boardwalk all the way down to the viewing point so wheelchairs/walkers can easily access the Aguasabon Falls. In the distant you’ll be able to enjoy a great view of Lake Superior.
